1. NEWS and ANALYSIS: Board approves a grant extension and a new grant for Nigeria’s malaria program
One malaria grant to Nigeria has been extended and a new malaria grant has been approved. Together, these moves will allow Nigeria to provide essential services through to the end of 2017. The extension and the new grant will be financed by reinvesting savings identified in Nigeria’s current malaria grants. Meanwhile, Nigeria risks forfeiting $45.7 million in incentive funding from 2014-2016 if the government cannot come up an equivalent amount in matching funds.
2. NEWS: First application window for 2017-2019 yields 93 funding requests
Of the 93 funding requests received in Window 1, 73 used a program continuation application, 13 a full review application, and seven a tailored review application. This information is provided by the Global Fund’s Funding Request Status Tracker.
3. NEWS: Global Fund pushes back on claims of overdependence on select suppliers of ARVs
The Global Fund and other international agencies have pushed back on claims that the major purchasers of HIV medications are overly dependent on a select few manufacturers. A recent article warned that this dependence could possibly result in drug shortages.
4. NEWS: Aidspan releases its Asia Pacific report
The Asia Pacific report, released by Aidspan, provides an overview of the history and current status of Global Fund support in the region and summarizes the main cross-cutting issues facing the region. It also includes profiles of select countries identified as priority countries based on their burdens of disease and country contexts.
5. NEWS: New ARV database being piloted in the EECA region
A new database on antiretrovirals in use in 15 countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia will be used by civil society organizations doing treatment advocacy. It will also help countries transitioning away from Global Fund support.
6. NEWS: Secretariat to roll out new orientation program for CCMs
The CCM Hub at the Global Fund Secretariat has developed a standard orientation package for CCM members. The purpose is to improve CCM performance by providing members with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively carry out their roles and responsibilities. The orientation package will be rolled out to CCMs in a phased approach, starting in April 2017.
7. NEWS: More information on catalytic investments
The Global Fund has made available more information on the three funding streams that make up its catalytic investments: Matching Funds, Multi-Country Approaches and Strategic Initiatives. This article provides details.
8. NEWS: More operational and implementation research initiatives should be included in funding proposals: Study
The Global Fund Secretariat, technical partners and countries all have a role to play in ensuring that more operational and implementation research is included in funding requests, according to a new study published in the journal Globalization and Health.
9. ANNOUNCEMENT: Global Fund seeks feedback from participants in country dialogues and the preparation of funding requests
The Global Fund is asking people who were involved in country dialogues and developing funding requests in the first window of applications for the 2017-2019 funding cycle to provide feedback by completing a survey.
