Global Fund grants to Thailand aim to strengthen services for key populations and support a successful transition

These may be the final TB and HIV grants to Thailand

On 1 December 2017, acting on the recommendation of the Global Fund’s Grant Approvals Committee (GAC), the Board approved two grants emanating from Thailand’s 2017 Window 2 TB/HIV funding request. The Ministry of Health’s Department of Disease Control will serve as principal recipient (PR) for one grant, totaling $18.0 million.

The Philippines’ HIV funding request was strategically focused with appropriately targeted investments towards HIV prevention programs for key populations, and access to testing and treatment services. The TB funding request submitted by the Bangladesh CCM received positive reviews from the Technical Review Panel (TRP) and the Grant Approvals Committee (GAC). The two grants emanating from the request were approved by the Board on 17 October. A total of $110.9 million was approved, reflecting the total TB allocation for Bangladesh of $97.9 million and an additional $13.0 million in catalytic matching funds.

When it reviewed the funding requests from Benin, the Grant Approvals Committee (GAC) and the Technical Review Panel (TRP) expressed serious concerns about what they perceived as gaps in Benin’s HIV and malaria programs – which, they said, were partly due to the decision of the country coordinating mechanism (CCM) to shift some of its allocation towards an RSSH funding request.
